Micro Molding

What is micro molding?

Micro molding is like regular molding's tiny cousin. Micro molding is a specialized manufacturing technique that involves creating incredibly small plastic parts with extreme precision. It's like the artisanal craft of plastic manufacturing, but in miniature. Using high-precision machinery and molds, micro molding can produce tiny (i.e. micro) components that are essential for various industries, including medical devices, electronics, and aerospace. This process allows for the production of intricate and minuscule parts, often smaller than a grain of rice, ensuring a level of detail and accuracy that regular molding techniques can't achieve.

What does the micro mean in micro molding?

The "micro" in micro molding refers to the extremely small scale of the plastic parts and components produced using this manufacturing technique. Micro molding is all about creating micro parts with extraordinary precision. These parts are often so tiny that they can be as small as a fraction of a millimeter in size, typically ranging from micrometers (µm) to a few millimeters. The "micro" aspect highlights the ability of micro molding to handle intricate, ultra-small features and to produce components that are essential in various industries, including medical devices, electronics, and aerospace, where precision at the microscale is paramount.

What’s SU8’s role in micro molding?

SU-8 is a unique photoresist material that plays a crucial role in micro molding. SU-8 is used in a technique known as "SU-8 molding" or "SU-8 replication," which involves creating microstructures or microfluidic channels on a master mold using SU-8 photolithography. These microstructures can be incredibly precise and intricate, thanks to the high-resolution capabilities of SU-8 photolithography.

SU-8 photolithography is a microfabrication technique used to create high-precision microstructures and microfluidic channels. The process involves coating a substrate with SU-8 photoresist, followed by soft baking to evaporate solvents, and then exposing the coated substrate to UV light through a photomask that defines the desired pattern. Post-exposure baking further solidifies the exposed areas, and a development step removes the unexposed SU-8, revealing the intricate microstructures. Known for its high resolution, SU-8 photolithography produces structures with vertical sidewalls and high aspect ratios, making it ideal for applications in MEMS devices, microfluidics, and other micro-scale technologies requiring robust and chemically resistant materials.

Once the master mold is created, it can be used in micro molding processes to replicate these tiny features onto plastic parts. SU-8, an epoxy-based material, boasts impressive rigidity and exceptional chemical resistance. These qualities make it an ideal choice for applications where robustness is a must, even in the face of challenging conditions. Consequently, SU-8 is extensively employed as a molding material in the production of MEMS devices and microfluidic channels, demonstrating its versatility and reliability in such critical domains.

SU-8's ability to create microscale features with excellent resolution and fidelity makes it an invaluable tool in micro molding. It enables the production of molds with intricate details, which are then used to create small, highly precise plastic components. This is especially useful in applications like microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), lab-on-a-chip devices, and microfluidics, where intricate microstructures are essential. SU-8 molding helps ensure that the micro molds used in the micro molding process are of the highest quality, ultimately contributing to the production of accurate and finely-detailed micro-molded parts.

Our Process for Micro Molds

Design: Collaborate extensively with the client to finalize the design and create the pattern mask necessary for mold production.

SU-8 Coating: Apply a uniform layer of SU-8 onto the wafer through spin-coating, followed by a heat-curing process to ensure consistency.

UV Exposure: Position the pattern mask over the cured SU-8 and subject it to UV exposure to achieve the desired patterns.

Development: Immerse the UV-exposed SU-8 mold in a solvent for dissolution (development), selectively revealing the intended patterns.

Quality Control and Delivery: After rigorous inspection, the SU-8 micro mold is prepared for delivery to the customer.
